Our Philosophy

Our curriculum philosophy is best summed up by the following quote from Philip Pullman (author):

“The most valuable attitude we can help children adopt – the one that, among other things, helps them to write and read with most fluency and effectiveness and enjoyment – I can best characterise by the word playful. It begins with nursery rhymes and nonsense poems, with clapping games and finger play and simple songs and picture books. It goes on to consist of fooling about with the stuff the world is made of: with wood and metal, and with language. Fooling about, playing with it, pushing it this way and that, turning it sideways, painting it different colours, looking at it from the back, putting one thing on top of another, asking silly questions, mixing things up, making absurd comparisons, discovering unexpected similarities, making pretty patterns, and all the time saying “Supposing….I wonder……What if?”

At this school your child is at Foundation Stage or Key Stage One of the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum is divided into Core and Foundation subjects.

Early Years

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework sets out the standards for development, learning and care of children from birth to five years old. Children start this curriculum at nursery or pre-school and this continues through their Reception year at school.

The curriculum for EYFS is designed to ignite children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and to build their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. The curriculum focuses primarily on child initiated learning within the seven areas of learning and development. These areas are all important and inter-connected.

The three prime areas are:

·     Personal, social and emotional development

·     Communication and language

·     Physical development

The four specific areas are:

·     Literacy

·     Mathematics

·     Understanding the world

·     Expressive arts and design

On a daily basis teachers plan high quality play opportunities for both the indoor and outdoor environment that give the children the opportunity to build on prior knowledge, develop new skills and gain independence. Well-planned play is a key way in which children learn with enjoyment and challenge. There will also be short whole class teaching inputs and adult led learning activities.

Key Stage 1

As children move from Reception they enter Key Stage 1 (KS1). This phase incorporates both Year 1 and Year 2. At Studley Infants School your child will either be in a Year 1 class, Year 2 class or a mixed Year 1 & 2 class.
In KS1 we follow the National Curriculum and its Programmes of Study for the different subject areas.

The core subjects are:

·     English

·     Mathematics

·     Science

The foundation subjects are:

·     Art and design

·     Computing

·     Design and technology (D.T)

·     Languages

·     Geography

·     History

·     Music

·     Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE)

·     Physical education (P.E)

·     Religious education (R.E)

As children move through the school, the amount of teacher led learning increases. Year 1 continue incorporating a play based approach into learning which adapts and changes to longer and more frequent whole class learning inputs and adult chosen learning activities as the year progresses and into Year 2.

Our KS1 curriculum works on a 2 year cycle, ensuring that all learning objectives and outcomes have been achieved by the end of your child's journey in KS1.

English and Maths are taught on a daily basis and take up more of the curriculum time than other subject areas. As part of our English teaching, children will have daily phonics teaching, regular handwriting lessons and guided reading sessions.

In Year 1 all children are required to complete a phonics screening check in June to assess their segmenting and blending skills in reading.

At the end of Year 2 children will be assessed against the end of KS1 framework and academic attainment will be reported in their end of year report.
